Diversity at a global scale

Since its establishment in the 1990s, SFC has implemented a curriculum that includes the study of Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Malayan-Indonesian, Arabic, Spanish, German, French, and English, seeking to promote the understanding between people of different linguistic and cultural backgrounds and endorsing a multilingualism that treasures reciprocity and equality in the coexistence of different communities. Yet, in the first decades of the 21st century, we feel the need to ask ourselves and reflect on the new questions that multilingualism poses in our days, as well as on the kind of linguistic, cultural, and social forms required in order to create a society of true coexistence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Diversity in particular societies<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Societies in general, including Japan, are characterized by the existence of different languages and cultures. However, in order to aim at a true and fair multicultural coexistence, simply praising linguistic and cultural diversity is not enough \u2013 instead, thourough and critical reflection on the one hand, and innovative visions and ideas on the other are urgently needed.
In this project, we will pay special attention to questions related to multilingual and multicultural coexistence, working in a transversal way on linguistic, cultural, and social issues. In our critical inquiry into language education and problems regarding language and society, we adopt both a micro and a macro point of view. From the micro perspective, we consider phenomena such as social relations of transnational migrants and refuges, use of minority languages, and language education in majority languages; from the macro stance, we aim at making proposals after examining language policies, language education policies, and socio-cultural policies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
